Braille signs and plates

Braille signs are plates whose text can be read by eye and identified by touch at the same time. Three layers work together: large high-contrast lettering for a partially sighted person, raised relief letters and pictograms for recognition by touch, and Braille dots for a fully blind user. One plate therefore serves people with very different levels of vision equally, and no companion is needed.

The signs are intended for government offices, hospitals and clinics, schools and universities, banks and service centres, hotels and museums, and transport facilities. They are conventionally mounted at a height that can be reached by hand, on the wall on the handle side of the door — so that someone searching finds the plate by running a hand along the wall, and it is not hidden when the door opens. The yellow background is a practical choice too: it is the highest-contrast option, and a partially sighted visitor notices it from a distance.

  • Room and office signs — text, relief and Braille together
  • Direction arrows and floor numbers with Braille
  • Washroom, stairs, ramp and lift signs
  • Made-to-order door plates with the room name

When choosing, account for text length (a Braille line cannot hold a long caption), plate size and mounting height, wall material and fixing method, and the number of languages required. Braille dot height and pitch must be maintained, otherwise the text cannot be read by finger — solutions are selected taking accessibility norm requirements into account.
