Text evacuation signs

Text evacuation signs are green signs that spell the word out directly, instead of a pictogram or alongside one: EXIT, EMERGENCY EXIT, ENTRANCE. Their advantage is removing doubt: an arrow and running figure give the direction, but whether a door is the main exit or a secondary one is something only the wording states. During panic that shortens the time spent looking for clarity.

The signs are intended for public buildings, retail and business centres, hotels and halls of residence, hospitals, educational institutions, and production and warehouse blocks. The green background follows the international colour code, so even at a distance the sign conveys that this is an escape route, while the text works as a second, clarifying layer. The lettering is large, high-contrast and in a plain typeface, so someone with partial sight loss can still read it. The sign is mounted above the door or on a side wall, within the line of sight.

  • EXIT (E22) — main evacuation exit sign
  • EMERGENCY EXIT (E23) — secondary exit sign
  • ENTRANCE — green sign indicating the way in
  • Versions for mounting above a door and on a side wall

When choosing, account for the viewing distance and the letter height it requires, the language of the wording, mounting height and lighting conditions, and whether visibility during a power failure is required. A text sign does not replace a pictogram direction indicator — the two work together as a system, and solutions are selected taking accessibility norm requirements into account.
