Tactile room signs and navigation

Tactile room signs and navigation form a system of information plates and wayfinding markers that help blind and visually impaired people move around a building on their own. Unlike ordinary signage, these signs carry information in several formats at once: raised (embossed) text, tactile pictograms and Braille. By running a hand across the surface, a person can read an office number, the purpose of a room or the direction of travel.

Tactile plates are mounted on doors and walls next to the entrance — on the handle side at a comfortable height (typically with the centre of the plate around 1.2–1.6 m above the floor), so the sign is easy to locate and read. These elements become part of a single navigation system together with tactile paving on the floor and mnemonic schemes at the entrance: the paving guides a person along the route, the mnemonic scheme gives an overall floor plan, and the plates confirm that the right room has been found.
