Toilet occupancy indicators
Washroom vacant/engaged indicators are illuminated displays fitted beside a cubicle door to show its status from a distance. Nobody has to push the door or knock: a visitor can see whether the cubicle is free from the far end of the corridor. This matters most for people with disabilities — for a wheelchair user or someone walking with support, an extra trip to an occupied cubicle is a real cost, and a building usually has only one accessible cubicle.
The indicators suit public buildings, retail and business centres, airports and railway stations, hospitals and clinics, theatres and concert halls, schools and universities. The display links to the door lock and changes colour as the status changes: typically green for vacant and red for engaged. LED backlighting keeps the wording readable at a distance and in low light, and showing the word alongside the colour accommodates visitors who cannot reliably distinguish colours.
- LED-backlit status display — vacant / engaged
- Door indicators wired to the lock status contact
- High-contrast status indicator for the accessible cubicle
- Illuminated panels readable along the whole corridor
When choosing, consider the door lock type and whether it has a status contact, the mounting height (the wording should sit at eye level), corridor lighting, and the viewing distance. A tactile sign with Braille is normally placed next to the indicator — solutions are selected taking accessibility norm requirements into account.
