Yellow tactile indicators are the most widely used colour in accessible environments and the one standards treat as the default. The reason is straightforward: yellow gives the greatest luminance contrast against dark concrete, asphalt and black granite, so it is noticed both by a partially sighted person and by a hurrying visitor with normal vision. For people with residual sight it is the difference in brightness, not the hue itself, that proves decisive.

The indicator comes in two forms: a long bar continuously marks a direction of travel or a boundary, while a stud builds an attention-grabbing warning field — the head of a staircase, the approach to a ramp, a platform edge, the stopping zone in front of a door.
