Colour tactile indicator — orange (bar and stud)

Orange tactile indicators suit environments where conspicuity comes first. Orange is familiar to most people as meaning pay attention, because safety practice uses it on workwear and roadworks signage. The difference from yellow is that it is darker, so against light grey concrete and pale asphalt it stands out better than yellow does.

The indicator comes in two forms. The bar marks the boundary where vehicle and pedestrian flows cross, while the stud creates a stopping or heightened-attention zone — in front of a goods vehicle route, at a crossing inside a workshop, at the point where a car park meets the building. The diamond relief is felt underfoot and through a cane tip and works against slipping in damp and dusty conditions.

Bear one point in mind: if a site already has a yellow tactile strip, placing orange immediately adjacent is not advisable — two neighbouring colours stop being distinguishable from one another and the signal strength of both drops.
